Working Through Arthritis Pain
When you’re struggling with arthritis, your first instinct may be to rest your body. But, believe it or not, taking it easy on the couch may actually set you back more. There’s a saying, “Motion is lotion.” And research seems to show there’s something to it.
Scientists have proven that moderate physical activity can actually help alleviate the pain and stiffness that comes with arthritis. The key? Figuring out how much exercise does the trick for you — and knowing when you need to dial back your effort. For instance, sometimes you’ll need to limit your range of motion on a particular exercise (e.g. not sinking down too deeply on squats if your knees hurt).
So, when it comes to working out, start off slowly and give yourself plenty of time to warm up. If your pain is in your lower body, be sure to keep your exercise as low-impact as possible. Say you’re performing “high knees”…try marching in place rather than hopping from foot to foot. And remember, pain is your body’s way of signaling that there’s a problem. So listen to it carefully.
You may be able to work through mild discomfort, but moderate to severe pain is a signal that you need to stop your activity immediately.
